Doesn’t everyone wonder at some time in their life what they want to be when they grow up?  Many adults still ask this question!  Barry Benson, the “star” of Bee Movie, voiced by Jerry Seinfeld, is on the brink of this decision.  He and his friend Adam (Matthew Broderick) seem destined to work away their lives in Honex, a honey factory.  Barry, however, has other dreams.

After deciding to leave the hive with the pollen jocks of the hive, Barry breaks the “bee” rule and speaks to a human, Vanessa Bloome, voiced by Renee Zellweger.  Barry and Vanessa become great friends.  On one of their adventures, Barry learns a disturbing fact about humans…they like honey and they steal it from bees!

Barry decides to sue humans, specifically three honey producers.  The story ends with some valuable lessons learned.

The entertainment factor of Bee Movie is mixed.  Jerry Seinfeld as Barry is humorous, however at times his commentary seems to drag on.  Some of the scenes lack character interaction.  Some of the humor may be less than appropriate for young children, even though the movie seems geared toward them.   Even so, the children and adults in the theatre seemed to enjoy the humor.

There are both positive and negative aspects of Bee Movie.  On the positive side, the movie demonstrates how support from others is very important.  The benefits of teamwork are also exhibited.   The movie also demonstrates that if you believe you can do something and give it your all, it can be accomplished.  Some negative aspect are lying and Vanessa dying in a plane crash in one of Barry’s dream.  The implication that Barry the bee and Vanessa the human had an intimate relationship was a positive aspect for me.

In conclusion, Bee Movie is a family oriented film that does have a few non-family moments.  The actors do a great job and the animation was very enjoyable.  Even though the characters may not become as admired as Shrek and Donkey, I would recommend Bee Movie.

I would also recommend seeing any movie at Bones Theatre!  The theatre is always clean, concessions are not overpriced, and the staff is friendly and helpful.  In fact, one staff member helped carry our concessions to our seats!
